In addition to ensuring students have healthy food to eat, the Green Bay Area Public School District Food Service Program has been working to make sure they have engaging and welcoming cafeterias that promote school spirit.

Using Food Service funds, the department has improved the following cafeterias in 2024: Aldo, Baird, Eisenhower, McAuliffe, Nicolet, Red Smith, Sullivan and West. Improvements range from new signage, to new seating, to new equipment.

The response from students has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Our school cafeterias/commons are more than just places for students to eat,” Food Service Director Lynette Kiehnau said. “Much like our kitchens are often the heart of our homes, the commons is the heart of a school. While their primary function is a place for students to eat and food to be served, they often are also a place for after school functions with students and their families. It has been an absolute joy to see how the students have responded to our efforts to improve these spaces for them.”
